In the Cockpit

The following pictures are the main controls and Indicators from a Cessna 172.

Airspeed Indicator - Shows how fast the aircraft is flying
Heading Indicator - Shows what direction the aircraft is going
Altimeter - Shows the altitude (height) of the aircraft in feet
Attitude Indicator - Shows the positioning of the aircraft, and the horizon.
Turn Coodinator - Shows the aircraft's movement when turning
Tachometer - Shows the engine's revolutions (spins) per minute (RMP)
VOR Receiver with Gildeslope - Allows a precise approach to the runway. VOR means Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range.
Automatic Direction Finder - Can be tuned to a certain location, then the needle points to that location
Vacuum Gauge/ Ammeter - The vacuum gauge shows the pressure made by the vacuum pump which is needed to operate the Attitude Indicator and Heading Indicator
Fuel Quantity - This gauge indicates the level of fuel in each tank
Exhaust Gas Temperature/Fuel flow - To get proper performance from an aircraft, the fuel flow must be 'leaned' at an altitude to compensate for the decrease in air density. This gauge helps the pilot lean the fuel for best efficiency.
Oil Temperature/Pressure Guage - This monitors the temperature and pressure of circulating oil in the engine
Audio Control Panel - This selects which radios you are transmitting and/or receiving on
GPS (Global Positioning System) uses satellites and LORAN (Long Range Navigation System) uses ground based transmitters to calculate and display the aircraft's exact position
Nav/Comm Radio - This is two radios in one. The left side is for voice communications with Air Traffic Control, other aircrafts and listening to weather and airport information. The right side is for tuning in VORs & ILSs to be shown on the VOR intruments
ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) - Tunes in the NDB frequency displayed on the ADF instrument
Transponder - This sends a signal to the Air Traffic Control radar which shows your position and altitude
DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) - Some aircrafts have a DME which shows the distance to a specified VOR/DME beacon.
Hobbs Meter - This is a timer which runs when the aircraft engine is running
Clock/Thermometer - This shows the time (in 24 hour time) and temperature inside and outside
